Self Assessment Return Deadlines& Penalties
The last tax year started on 6 April 2016 and ended on 5 April 2017. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) must receive your tax return and any money you owe by the deadline.
31 January 2018 midnight is the last deadline to submit tax year 2016-2017 self assessment tax return. You must also pay all your tax bill by this deadline to avoid penalties.
A Taxable person will get a penalty if he/she misses the deadline for submitting the return or if after submitting return misses to clear out tax bill. Penalty of £100 if tax return is up to 3 months late. One may have to pay more if it’s later, or if you pay your tax bill late.
Late tax payer can appeal against penalty if they have some reasonable excuse including :
– Close relative deaths near end of deadline.
– System crash near deadline.
– Serious hospitalization.
– HMRC online service crash.
– Flood, or fire preventing from submission.
